Post-Harvest Soil Sampling

We have been hustling to take advantage of the window of dry weather over the past two weeks to take post-harvest soil samples. Sampling at this time provides a version of “soil nutrient report card”, reflecting what nutrients are left following this season’s management decisions and crop performance.

In some fields we are taking soil samples directly through cover crops that were planted in August and September and are at various levels of establishment. These cover crops will help with nutrient retention, erosion protection, and habitat provision. Some of them will become forage for migratory birds and be grazed away before the spring, but those fields that remain vegetated can be credited for the nutrients the cover crops have helped to retain.

Have you been able to collect your post-harvest soil samples this fall?
